Sex Work, Escorting and Sexual Health

Bookmark this page More in this section

The University of Leeds research study found no evidence of organised prostitution in dance clubs. For owners & managers of clubs to be involved in such would violate their licensing agreements and they would be closed down. Some dancers provided anecdotal evidence of cases of dancers who also sold sexual services and in the survey a small minority of dancers reported having escorted or having worked in another sector of the sex industry. The majority of dancers were clear that they were not involved in sex work and resisted strongly the label of sex workers seeing themselves as dancers, strippers, performers or entertainers.

If you or anyone you know does sex work and wants to access health or other support you can go to UK Network of Sex Work Projects (UKNSWP) for information about sex work support projects in your area.

Sex work support projects in the network can offer you free, confidential and non-judgemental advice and support about a range of issues related to sex work e.g. information about the law, negotiating safer sex and personal safety. The majority offer free safer sex supplies, health services or can sign post you to these.

The UKNSWP website also has a safety information resource especially for sex workers working in all sectors including escorting, you can download this for free at: http://www.uknswp.org/wp-content/uploads/RSW2.pdf. The support projects in the UKNSWP network can put you in touch with local projects who offer ugly mugs schemes, these are schemes where sex workers can report violent, abusive individuals who target sex workers and sex workers can receive warnings about such individuals. From summer 2012 The Terence Higgins Trust Website has a range of information about HIV and wider sexual health matters.
